✂️ What Is Topping

Step by Step Guide

What is Topping? Topping is a high-stress training (HST) technique used to manipulate the growth pattern of cannabis plants. It involves cutting off the top growth tip (apical meristem) of the main stem, which encourages the plant to develop multiple main colas instead of one dominant central cola. This results in a bushier plant with more bud sites, ultimately increasing yield.

When to Top Your Cannabis Plant: Topping is typically performed during the vegetative stage when the plant has developed several sets of true leaves and is actively growing. It's best to top your plant when it has at least 4 to 6 nodes (sets of leaves).

How to Top Your Cannabis Plant:

  1. Gather your tools: You'll need sharp, sterilized scissors or pruning shears to make a clean cut.

  2. Identify the growth tip: Locate the newest growth tip at the top of the main stem. This is the apical meristem.

  3. Choose where to make the cut: Select a spot just above the node below the apical meristem. This node will become the new growth tip.

  4. Make the cut: Use your scissors or shears to carefully cut through the main stem just above the selected node. Make sure the cut is clean and straight.

  5. Monitor and care for your plant: After topping, your plant may experience some shock and temporary stunting of growth. Provide adequate light, water, and nutrients to support recovery and new growth.

Benefits of Topping:

  • Increases the number of main colas, leading to higher yields.

  • Promotes bushier growth and more even canopy distribution.

  • Encourages lateral branching and bud development.

  • Can help manage plant height and shape for better light penetration and airflow.

Precautions:

  • Always use clean and sharp tools to minimize the risk of introducing infections.

  • Avoid topping plants too late into the vegetative stage, as this can delay flowering and reduce yield potential.

  • Monitor your plant closely after topping to ensure it recovers well and resumes healthy growth.

Remember, topping is just one of many training techniques available to cannabis growers. Experiment with different methods and find what works best for your growing environment and goals.
